In 1953, the Refining Department of Beijing Petroleum Institute opened the course of engineering thermodynamics and heat transfer; in September 1954, the Thermal Engineering Teaching and Research Section was established, under the (Petroleum) Refining Department; in July 1962, the Thermal Engineering Teaching and Research Section was transferred to Petroleum Machinery Tie. In September 1995, the school established the Department of Architectural Engineering. In the same year, the thermal energy teaching and research section was transferred to the Department of Architectural Engineering. In September 1999, the Department of Thermal Engineering and the Department of Oil and Gas Storage and Transportation merged to form the Department of Storage and Transportation Engineering; in March 2001, the Department of Storage and Transportation Engineering and the Department of Construction Engineering merged to form the School of Storage, Transportation and Construction Engineering, and the Thermal Engineering Department was affiliated with Storage and Transportation Engineering. Department of Thermal Energy Engineering; in 2004, the Department of Thermal Energy Engineering became the Department of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering; in 2013, the Department of Thermal Energy and Power Engineering was renamed the Department of Energy and Power Engineering. In July 2019, the Department of Energy and Power Engineering was included in Shidayankuang New Energy College.

The Department of Energy and Power Engineering currently has 30 teachers (including 3 post-doctoral teachers), including 7 professors, 12 associate professors, and the proportion of senior professional titles reaches 63%; 24 have doctoral degrees, accounting for 80%, and teachers with overseas academic experience account for than 33%. Among them, there are 6 doctoral supervisors and 16 master supervisors.

The Department of Energy and Power Engineering has two undergraduate majors: Energy and Power Engineering and New Energy Science and Technology.

The discipline of energy and power engineering is based on utilizing the characteristics of the petroleum industry to achieve energy conservation and consumption reduction in the field of petroleum and petrochemicals, and aims to build and develop an international high-level discipline of thermal energy and power engineering, forming a number of crossovers between the petroleum industry and the thermal energy engineering field. At the same time, it has also opened up research on new energy and new cutting-edge technologies. At present, there are mainly multiphase flow heat transfer and numerical calculation in the oil and gas industry, thermal oil recovery theory and practice, testing and analysis of thermal properties in petroleum engineering, flow and heat transfer of complex fluids (non-Newtonian fluids) in petroleum engineering, petroleum extraction, gathering and transportation and Analysis and evaluation of energy saving and consumption reduction in processing, thermal energy engineering, numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer and research on enhanced heat transfer technology, micro-scale heat transfer technology, refrigeration and heat pump technology development, internal combustion engine fuel characteristics and combustion simulation, thermal process optimization and System energy saving, clean energy development and utilization.

In the past ten years, a total of 10 scientific monographs have been published, and more than 400 scientific research papers have been published, of which more than 260 papers have been indexed by SCI, EI, and ISTP. In addition, combining advanced research results with practical engineering applications, more than 50 invention patents have been authorized in the past ten years, including the National Technology Invention Award, the Ministry of Education University Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of PetroChina Science and Technology Progress Award, Shandong Province Science and Technology Progress Award, More than 20 scientific and technological awards above the provincial and ministerial level, including the China Petrochemical Association Science and Technology Progress Award.
